How to File for Divorce
I was in divorce court a few weeks ago and witnessed two people make the biggest mistake people make when filing their own divorce actions.
They showed up in court without a divorce judgment for the judge to sign. The divorce judgment is the document the judge signs that officially ends your marriage.
The signed divorce judgment serves as proof that you are actually divorced. It is also the document that will allow you to resume the use of your maiden name. You will need to take a copy with you when you go to the DMV and social security office to change your name.
A copy of divorce judgment is kept on file at the courthouse and you should file your copy away with your other important documents.
In case you are wondering what a divorce judgment looks like, you can find a copy here.

How to Pay for Your Divorce
A few days ago I posted a link to an article about the impact the economy is having on marriage and divorce.
There is no reason why you should have to stay in a miserable marriage because you lack the funds to get a divorce.
I believe where there is a will, there is a way. And so does Angela Logan.
She was facing foreclosre and instead of worrying about how she was going to get the money she needed, she started baking apple cakes and selling them to raise funds.
Angela’s story should inspire anyone who is using money as an excuse not to do what they know needs to be done.

Is it cheaper to keep her or him?
According to recent reports the divorce rate is dropping. That sounds like good news for married couples but bad news for divorce lawyers.
However, the bad news for married couples is that the reason divorce rates are dropping is because people can’t afford to split up.
This article sheds light on the impact the economy is having on marriage and divorce.

What’s Jackie reading?
This quote sums up the message of Miller’s book:
Life is full of fits and starts. Some things are easy; some are not. Some things go and some things stop. Do your work; then set it down. There are no failures. Forgive and forget yourself.
Miller was obviously referring to motherhood when she wrote these words. But, as I was reading her book I kept thinking how her message was also applicable to divorce. Check it out and let me know what you think.

How to Survive Your Divorce

What’s the answer?
Do you love your child more than life itself?
Is there anything you wouldn’t be willing to do to protect your child?
Are you willing to do everything you can to raise your child to be a happy and emotionally healthy adult?
Would you be willing to walk over hot coals to protect your child?
Would you wrestle a rabid alligator to save your child?
Would you sacrafice everything you have to provide for your child?
Assuming you answered “yes” to all of the above questions, can I assume that the answer to these questions is also “yes”:
Are you willing to stop fighting with your ex when your child is present in order to protect his/her esteem and emotional health?
Will you do everything you can to get along with your ex because doing so is in your child’s best interest?
Can you commit to staying positive for the sake of your child when confronted by your ex’s bad behavior or negative comments?

How to File for Divorce
Before you decide to file your own divorce action, it may be a good idea to visit the courthouse and observe the process.
You can witness first-hand what you will need to do and say when you go to court. And most importantly you can learn from the mistakes other people make when filing their own divorce cases.
In Greensboro, divorce cases are scheduled every Monday at 2 pm in courtroom 2A.
